IZNIK DISH
The circular polychrome dish is painted with an asymmetrical composition of meandering stems and foliage with red carnations and blue tulips on a white ground. The everted rim is decorated with a wave and rock pattern painted in cobalt blue, turquoise and black. The reverse of the dish is decorated with alternating cobalt blue and green flowers and paired cobalt blue tulip sprigs. An Iznik dish of symmetrical arrangement with two heart-shaped saz leaves and red roses, from the second half of the 16th century, is illustrated in B. Rackham, Islamic Pottery and Italian Maiolica: Illustrated Catalogue of a Private Collection, Faber and Faber, London, 1959, Pl. 40C, No. 112.
