A Mughal Red Sandstone Panel
A red sandstone panel of rectangular form deeply carved with floral motifs in a symmetrical composition. The central rosette has on both sides a flower spray with stylized leaves, enclosed within a rectangular floral scrolling frame of interlocking ornamental and straight links with motifs of flower heads at both ends of the frame. The floral designs with stylised elements were very popular in the Mughal period art and architecture.
For similar floral designs, see two 18th century jali (screens) in the Dallas Museum of Art, object numbers 2009. 8. 1 & 2009. 8. 2.
