Chinese Iron Red Ewer Made for the Indian Market 外销瓷矾红花卉纹执壶

A moulded ewer made for the Indian market in the form of a Middle Eastern brass aftābe. A central tear-shaped cartouche is decorated with lotus with a central tear-shape decorated with a lotus flower surrounded by cloud bands (ruyi) reserved on a red ground and flanked by sprigs of flowers. The neck is decorated with vertical petals radiating from a band of floral decoration. The form is derived from Indian ablution ewers (aftābe). A pair of similar ewers in The Victoria and Albert Museum, London (accession Numbers 240&A-1876 and 240B&C-1876), are dated to 1710-1730 and made in Jingdezhen. See also the Topkapi Palace Museum, Accession Number TKS 15/4042.
