A large Ceylonese Ebony and Specimen Wood Centre Table
This rare, large table of circular form has a design of 30 petals within feathered bands radiating from a central floral motif. The petals are inlaid with different types of native wood. The ebony lobed baluster has ornamentally carved legs with leaf patterns. This substantial table is known as Ceylonese export furniture and would have been made for a person of rank and wealth. The skills of the craftsman are evident in expert handling of the different woods, resulting in a striking, smoothly flowing design of the table top. References to these types of centre tables can be found in 19th century records relating to Ceylonese furniture and they were also exhibited in international exhibitions in the 19th century.
