Full Description

Company School Ivory Group of Amorous Couple

This carved ivory group of an amorous couple depicts the two lovers lying side by side on a charpoy. A pillow is placed underneath their heads and the couple is holding each other, with a gentle expression on their faces. The robes are intricately carved, giving an impression of lightness and fluidity. This is accentuated by the couple’s slightly raised bodies on the charpoy. These types of ivory carvings have often an exotic subject matter, such as a snake charmer standing on a rectangular dais, luring a cobra out of its basket. They were produced for the European market where the demand for such luxury objects was high. The subject matter of a loving couple can be found in many 18th and 19th century  Indian miniature paintings.
